With so much construction and change hitting the North Shore as of late, many have found it fair to ask that evergreen question: Is Staten Island becoming the new Brooklyn?

In 2017, it does have some weight to it. With the NY Wheel and SI outlets quickly coming into focus and the recent emergence of URBY and the Lighthouse Point housing spaces, it is worth re-evaluating where SI stands. It seems that every few years we ask this question, but as construction is at an all-time high right now it begs us to also ponder what exactly this means for SI in the months and years to come.

Master of Landscape Architecture student Kate Jirasiritham showcases Staten Island’s North Shore in their short video for the Spitzer School of Architecture at CCNY.

The film itself is a bike tour of the North Shore mixed with arial shots of the Kill Van Kull. Drone footage is used to highlight areas such as Snug Harbor, Fresh Kills, and the Richmond Terrace Wetlands.

Staten Island is gearing up for NYC's annual Beer Week from Feb 24th through March 4th with drink specials and local highlights to satisfy the thirstiest of beer lovers!

Local fans of the hit HBO show Game of Thrones should be getting excited and clearing their schedules for Thursday, March 30th. The critically acclaimed parody, titled “Graeme of Thrones”, is coming to Staten Island’s St. George Theatre.

The unauthorized parody show has traveled and put on shows throughout the world and originally comes to us from London’s West End. It was created by some of UK’s top tier comedy writers and has been called a treat for fans and an introduction for the unenlightened. The show promises to be just as entertaining as it is ridiculous. 

The show starts at 8 pm on Thursday, March 30th and Ticket prices range from $39 to $59.

The SI Filmmaker’s Showcase is a prime showcase for local Staten Island filmmakers and will be coming to Edgewater Hall on February 26th.

With a theme of "Of Life and Art," poetic stories and a documentary that takes to task our fears as a nation are the chief highlights on-deck for the event. As well as a lineup of darkly comedic shorts in the "Without a Laugh Track" portion. While "Island Blues" wraps things up with films featuring strong local and NYC based influences.

It all starts Sunday February 26th from 2pm to 7pm at Edgewater Hall 691 Bay St, Staten Island, New York 10304

Back in 2012, Hurricane Sandy tore through the tri-state area, creating massive property damage in its wake. One of the prominent transportation hubs effected was the South Ferry subway station, which ended up flooded and in disrepair.

Well this June, the South Ferry station is set to reopen after a lengthy $343 million dollar renovation project that will finally allow Staten Islanders to easily deal with the final portion of their city-inbound commute instead of having to have used alternate subway routes after getting off the ferry in Manhattan the past few years.

Last year the SI Shakespearean Theater Company put on a modern twist on ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and they have announced that they will be returning this March with a performance of the Shakespeare Comedy “Twelfth Night or What You Will.’

The production will be directed by Frank Williams, who has roots in the SI arts scene as a core member of the Wahoo Skiffle crazies jug band. The performance will take place at The Little Victory Theatre.

If you’re a fan of both pizza and Subway Restaurants then I’ve got some great news for you. A new pizzeria has recently popped up in the New Dorp section of Staten Island with a new concept for pizza that is arguably the future. M2O Pizza, which is short for “Made 2 Order Pizza”, is the first of its kind for islanders and if you’ve ever been to Subway then you’re probably already familiar with how it works. 

When you enter the pizzeria, you approach a counter that has more than a few choices to go atop your pizza. Toppings, cheeses, sauces; any and every combination you can think of is possible at M2O. Just off the coast of Staten Island lives two small islands that act as a home to more than a dozen seals. Those islands are Swinburne and Hoffman islands and they’re within a mile of the FDR Beach. If you’ve ever wanted to just get on a boat and go check out some marine life, now’s your chance!

Staten Island’s personal marine mammal research organization, Gotham Whale, offers seal counting tours, as well as whale watching tours for those interested. All of their tours are done on their boat, the American Princess. Or if you're feeling like you'd rather stay inside and enjoy the views of your living room, YouTuber Johnny Drone has uploaded drone footage of those islands, for your viewing pleasure.

Richmond City Media, a Staten Island media company, is a month away from holding their second annual Staten Island Filmmaker’s Showcase. Last year saw a great turnout for their first showcase and now it’s time for another one.

If you’re a creator or a filmmaker, this is the event for you. The showcase is open for submissions now and you have until the 27th of January to submit the best work you have to show. The actual event will take place on February 26th and will be held at Staten Island’s Edgewater Hall, located at 691 Bay Street.
