For the past 17 years, artist, designer, roller disco diva and Queen of Coney Island, Lola Star, has sold her unique designs along the Coney Island Boardwalk. On Saturday, May 13,she will be at Staten Island's Urby to preview her permanent storefront coming later this summer with a pop up festival. 

There will also be a second party at Urby on May 20th which will include a Bling Bar, pin up hair classes, and wine & chocolate parties.

According to Lola Star herself,

The Lola Star pop-up shop will be a summertime wonderland, featuring a colorful bazaar of Staten Island-themed apparel for men, women and kids, along with an array of collectable novelties and colorful gifts of handmade accessories.

For the second year in a row, New Dorp High School will be gearing up to showcase student art, local comic vendors, LARPing, and costume contests as part of their now-annual Comic Con event held at the school on Saturday, May 20th, 2017.

The event is five dollars at the door and includes access to more showcase space than last year, for greater ease and to more easily segment the various events and stations. There will be video game contests and panels by local graphic artists.

Recently, Staten Island brunch and dinner staple Marie's Gourmet went through a cosmetic overhaul. In the process, crafting a fresh, modern look to complement their inviting and varied local favorites like the all-day breakfast pizza or the nightly dinner specials.

With artwork painted and crafted by fellow Staten Islanders and a brand new bar setup, Marie's has successfully jazzed up it's decor, ironically enough, just in time to host it's regular music nights.

Nafissah Art Collectibles and media producer Frances Wilson Noellez have come together to present an art exhibition at Hub 17 from April 29th until May 7th.

Hub 17 is an Art and Media space at 73 Wave Street [map] in Downtown Staten Island. This event is here to help showcase artists Synthia St. James, Charles Bibbs, and others.

On April 23rd, Staten Island’s Gatsby’s On The Bay and Amendment 18 Bar & Grill will be hosting a 1920’s cocktail party at Edgewater Hall. 

The event will be a real blast from the past, with jazz music blaring throughout all corners of the hall and early Americana art adorning the walls.

If you have gone anywhere near the ferry lately, you have no doubt noticed that the giant cranes have finally been put in place to help erect the NY Wheel.

The cranes come in two sizes: one that can life 600 tons and the other being able to lift over 1,350 tons. In fact, the smaller of the two cranes is mainly going to be used to help build the bigger crane! 

The New York Wheel began construction in May of 2015 and is expected to see its grand opening sometime in early 2018.

With so much construction and change hitting the North Shore as of late, many have found it fair to ask that evergreen question: Is Staten Island becoming the new Brooklyn?

In 2017, it does have some weight to it. With the NY Wheel and SI outlets quickly coming into focus and the recent emergence of URBY and the Lighthouse Point housing spaces, it is worth re-evaluating where SI stands. It seems that every few years we ask this question, but as construction is at an all-time high right now it begs us to also ponder what exactly this means for SI in the months and years to come.
